whoever runs these early leaders of the Stone-Campbell Movement (the faith tradition I grew up in) twitter accounts is hilarious. while most are not representative of the historical people themselves (Barton Stone worked tirelessly toward Christian unity and fought legalism, however Daniel Sommer may have well been a monster) they do caricature most of what went wrong in the movement in the twentieth century. so we had a bad century, who doesn’t? these twitters had me loling for hours.
1. Barton Stone did not believe in baptism as a requirement for communion. But growing up in the church of christ, it made me laugh out loud.
2. Prooftexting has rightfully become a four-letter word in modern Biblical studies. Campbell seemed to be on top of things then, makes sense he would be now.
3. Truthfully, Daniel Sommer would probably have said this in his time. He was the beginning of the end for the things Stone and Campbell worked towards.
4. This one is funny cause it is. None of my charismatic friends could understand why we didn’t raise hands in worship. I couldn’t answer them.
